Short Answer: Yes. The school mattresses are notoriously uncomfortable without a mattress topper.

Longer Answer: We thought about a lot of smoother ways to say this, but the answer is simply yes. The school provided mattresses (no offense to the people that picked them out when the school was first founded) are ridiculous. There are prisons that have nicer mattresses. We surveyed over 1000 students just to make sure everyone agreed and when asked to rate how important buying a mattress topper was on a scale from 1 to 10 with 1 being that it was a waste of money and they didn't really need it and 10 being that it was the most important purchase they made for their dorm by a long-shot the average response was an 8.1 and 32% of people said 10. You might not necessarily buy ours, but we’ll bet you a nickel you’re going to buy a mattress topper of some sort if you like being comfortable at all. We’ll also bet you a nickel that ours is the nicest one you can find so if you do decide that you care about sleeping and don’t want to take any chances this is your best bet.

Is sleeping like a pile-of-bricks and waking up rejuvenated every morning worth $250? Sorry - here’s a more serious response: If we could charge less than $250 we would, but the simple truth is that the materials the College Toppers are made out of (the two layers of foam, the cover, etc.) aren’t cheap. We set out to make the best mattress topper scientifically possible out of the best materials available and we did, but it came at a price. When you think about how much it’ll get used (every single day minus the occasional all-nighter) it doesn’t seem as daunting. Definitely cheaper than sleeping horribly and getting Starbucks 3 times a day to make up for it also. Think of it as an investment in a better, more rested, happier you.

The technical answer: We make the College Topper out of materials that have been researched and developed specifically to comfortably contour the body and dissipate heat away from it in order to allow for a deeper, more restful sleep. We also added straps to keep the College Topper from sliding around under your sheets and getting out of place (common issue with normal toppers).

The long-winded analogy answer: Well you want to know what - we’re glad you asked because a lot of people think all mattress toppers are the same and it’s one of the craziest things we’ve ever heard. It’d be like saying a saltine and a twinkie are the same thing because they’re both food. One is thin and you eat it because you’re still starving and you ran out of dip a while ago, but you’re definitely not satisfied. While a twinkie is a pillowy piece of deliciousness you can walk away from feeling like you really treated yourself to something special. The College Topper is like a twinkie except healthy and something you can enjoy everyday without feeling guilty. Did that analogy work? We’re not sure. The main point is that the College Topper is much much much nicer in all ways than the egg-crate looking mattress topper you saw at WalMart for $25. Tom Brady might not eat twinkies, but he does sleep on Molecule products because they really are the best.

Technical Answer: 1. You don’t have to worry about slipping, the topper comes with straps to secure the topper in place. 2. The top layer of foam promotes airflow and heat transfer so you won’t feel too hot or uncomfortable while you sleep. 3. The bottom layer of foam features 3-zones for dynamic support for different parts of your body you’ll be perfectly supported from head to toe.

Relatable Answer: Really the benefits of the College Topper are the same as the benefits of good sleep in general - better attentiveness, better focus, overall better everything. Being tired is the worst and having to sleep on something uncomfortable can lead to 8-hours of sleep feeling like 0. In a survey of over 1000 students from over 10 different schools we asked people to rate how comfortable the the school mattress was without a mattress topper out of 5 stars and the average response was 2.7 stars. 2.7 stars is the same rating as the bad take-out food spot in your town that everyone wonders how it’s still in business. After we asked them to rate it we also asked for a quick description in their own words. Here are some highlights:

Yes it does. We made our College Topper specifically to fit the mattress size typically (99.9% of the time) provided by colleges. The technical term for the college sized mattress is “Twin XL”, but to put it in more relatable terms it’s the width of a Twin (39”) and the length of a Queen (80”). So a Twin XL mattress is really just a Twin mattress with 5 inches of extra length.

After receiving the topper unroll it and remove the plastic. From there the topper will begin to expand immediately and will be ready within a few minutes. Attach the straps located at the corner of the topper underneath each corner of the mattress. It may take up to 24 hours to fully expand.

Definitely - if you happen to have a Twin XL sized mattress somewhere else.

The college topper is only available in Twin XL: 80”L X 39” W X 3” H . However, there are other sizes in the normal (non-college) Molecule mattress toppers available that come in different sizes!

The College Topper is built to last for 10 years. Hopefully you’ll be out of the dorms and won’t need it in 10 years, but we’ve got you covered just in case and there’s no judgement coming from us. You’re actually thinking ahead far enough to think about washing this thing? Assuming you’re a parent, but we’re definitely impressed if you’re not. Anyways, to wash the cover, unzip and remove the cover and machine wash in cold water, delicate cycle. Tumble dry low and remove from dryer promptly. You may also spot clean using a soft sponge or cloth and some diluted gentle soap and warm water.
